Support Peaceful Negotiations with Iran! Oppose New Sanctions!
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Mt. 5:9).
The
2014 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA passed a
resolution in support of negotiations with Iran stating that, “With
the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we seek to discern what it means to be
peacemakers, in the conflict-ridden context of relationships between
the U.S. and Iran.” The Assembly called on all participants in
the process to refrain from imposing new conditions or new sanctions
that would hinder negotiations.
The
General Assembly recognized that Iran, as a signatory of the Nuclear
Non Proliferation Treaty, has
the right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, on condition that
they remain in full compliance with the terms of the treaty, including
full allowance for inspection of their nuclear
facilities to ensure that these are only for non-military purposes.
Negotiators
have made real and substantial progress toward a long-term agreement
between the US and Iran that would guard against a nuclear-armed Iran.
Both countries are working hard to secure a framework agreement by early
spring. But, some in Congress are calling for more sanctions now that
would jeopardize the talks.

Please
contact your member of congress and tell them to support negotiations
with Iran and
oppose any new sanctions. Diplomacy with Iran is working. Iran is
further from building a nuclear weapon today than it was before the
negotiations began. And, there is compelling evidence that a final deal
is well within reach.
Next
Tuesday, Prime Minister Netanyahu is expected to address congress and
ask for more sanctions against Iran at a delicate time of negotiations.
It is important for your members of congress to hear from their
constituents in support of negotiations.
